Rozzy Pender has a dream. Only marriage stands in her way.

Marrying for love holds no appeal for Rozzy Pender. As she’s seen with her parents, giving someone her heart only means giving them the power to hurt her. Besides, she can only inherit the ranch she loves if she marries—which means losing it to her husband anyway. So she comes up with a plan. She won’t marry Rafe, the man she loves, but rather the furthest thing from a rancher she can find—a gentleman from Denver. Conveniently, he’s also the last person she can ever have feelings for, which makes him perfectly safe.

Rafe Adams has spent his life at Rozzy’s side, planning for the happily-ever-after that Rozzy can’t seem to see. All he wants is for them to ride the range together on the land she loves. But when she helps him rescue a litter of puppies in his barn overnight and puts both their reputations in jeopardy, Rozzy’s mother forces him to propose before he’s ready, exposing Rozzy’s plot.

Can Rozzy choose between her beloved ranch and the man who holds her fragile heart?

This lighthearted, sweet western historical romance set in the 1920s is for fans of Evie Dunmore and Georgette Heyer.

    Reader’s Notes:

    – this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

    – this is told from Rosaline (Rozzy) & Rafe’s points of view

    – this occurs during 1924

    Review:

It’s been a bit since I’ve read any kind of historical romance, but I loved that I got to jump back in with this book! This story has some of my favorite tropes – they’re neighbors & they’re best friends! – and the historical aspect helped with giving the reason they couldn’t be together (Rozzy wanted to be in charge of her family’s ranch, not have her husband have control over it). Though at times her thought process for that was a bit maddening (doesn’t she realize that her best friend would let her do what she’d want to with her ranch?), it was also so relatable because of the fact that she didn’t want to lose her best friend if something were to go wrong with a romantic relationship between them so she just didn’t really want to try at all at first. Some of my favorite scenes/moments from this story included: match-making mama, the barn dance, the puppy situation, Rafe with his workers, Rozzy with her workers, Rafe’s attempts at learning how to woo his woman from books, and when Henry talked sense into Rozzy!

(Also, if you get the chance to hold a physical copy of this book in your hands, the chapter headings are gorgeous and match the cover beautifully!)

    Summary:

Rozzy has seen what love can do to people through her parents’ troubling marriage and she wants nothing to do with it. Especially with her control over her beloved ranch on the line. So to fix her life the best way she can, Rozzy creates a plan to marry a man who is the complete opposite of a rancher and would know nothing about the job. Leaving her to do whatever she wants. But with her feelings for her best friend pushing to the surface and fears being torn down, is Rozzy still going to want to go through with it?

Rafe has been best friends with Rozzy forever and longs to make her his. He knows that she has fears of love, he’s been there helping mitigate her parents’ spats and comfort her when things get out of hand, and Rafe wants to show Rozzy that those fears aren’t going to happen for them. But when an incident leads to people questioning their reputations, Rafe is forced to act much quicker than he anticipated with a disappointing proposal. But maybe, just maybe, he can turn things around, get Rozzy to see him in a new light, & have her accept and reciprocate his affections…
